RuqayyahHow I came to IslamSalaam. My name is Ruqayyah.
I would like to share my story as to how i found Islam. At the time, I was 16
years old travelling to NYC. On the train I saw a sister who was garbed in
such a way that it stirred my heart. After staring at her for a moment, I
finally got up enough nerve to ask her what she was. Her aura and serenity
touched my soul. She smiled and softly told me that she was a Muslim. Even
though I didn't know what a Muslim was at the time, my heart told me this was
right.
Please know that this was 22 years ago, so Muslims were not very visible back then. I made it to the city where i had planned to shop. Surpisingly there is the streets i saw a lot of brothers selling oils and teaching about Islam. So i bought musk oil and got directions to a masjid in Brooklyn, NY. The guidance of Islam was very different from what I had learned in Christianity. I think what I found most soothing to my heart was to learn that Islam doesn't teach that Jesus (pbuh) was crucified on the cross. I had always found this to be troubling in my heart as a child. So after 6 years of soul searching and studying about Islam, I made the best decision in my life . I have been spiritually at peace ever since. Now when a woman asks me about Islam I can smile as the sister did 23 years ago, and tell her I am a Muslim.
